Lake Dumbleyung Easter Regatta

Sailing on Lake Dumbleyung 2006

“A unique experience”

A weekend sailing on the renowned and refilled Lake Dumbleyung with good friends, great local food and loads of fun.

Following on from the overwhelming success of Septembers sailing weekend and with repeated requests from the sailors; the town of Dumbleyung are doing it again! During the Easter Weekend of 14, 15 & 16 April we welcome any sailing vessels to come and sail on the largest inland lake in Western Australia. It will be a leisurely weekend of sailing on our historically renowned Lake Dumbleyung with the local community serving up their renowned hospitality; wonderful locally made food, fantastic entertainment and great times.

Wonderful rains throughout the region last winter have seen the Lake return to 2/3 capacity. The Lake measures approx. 12km by 5km, is 2 metres deep on average and it is an amazing expanse of inland water.

The weekend will begin with the committee being at the Yacht Club site from 8am on Saturday to welcome all sailors. There will be a “Black Duck Dinner” in the Yacht Club on Saturday evening, an Easter Egg hunt on Sunday, delicious locally made hampers Sunday afternoon, aromatic lamb burgers Sunday evening and the legendary band “Big Men Working” playing at the Yacht Club on Sunday night from 5pm with the bar opening at 4pm on both days.

To order the Black Duck Dinner, Hampers or Lamb Burgers please fill out the attached form.

The kiosk on site will be selling rolls, sandwiches, hot dogs, tea/coffee, cake, chips, drinks and chocolates from 9am – 4pm both days.

There are EFTPOS facilities in town at the Roadhouse, General Store and Tavern.

A courtesy bus will be available to yacht entrants to ferry them between town and the lake during the weekend. A gold coin will be charged per family for non-entrants.
Boats only will be allowed past the first paddock at the yacht club turnoff.

Any funds raised from the weekend will go towards improving community facilities and programs such as St John Ambulance, Dumbleyung P&C, Sports and Hobby groups. The community of Dumbleyung thank you for your support.

If you know of anyone who may be interested in joining us for the weekend please feel free to pass this on.

If you have any queries please contact the coordinator for the weekend:

Julie Ramm on 98642014 or email: cjramm@bigpond.com.

Dumbleyung details:

The small community of Dumbleyung - about 257km south-east of Perth and 40km west of Wagin - would appear a most unlikely shrine to the world of speed. But it was at Lake Dumbleyung - the largest permanent stretch of inland natural water in WA and an important wildlife sanctuary - that, in December 1964, the famous Englishman Donald Campbell set the world water speed record of 276.3 mph (444.66km/h). In July of the same year, Campbell had set a new land speed record of 648.6km/h on Lake Eyre, in South Australia.  Although the individual land and water speed records have been smashed since the 1960’s, Donald Campbell still to this day holds the record for the only man to break and hold both the World Water Speed and the World Land Speed record in the same calendar year – 1964.    On Pussy Cat Hill, overlooking the shores of the lake, there’s a memorial to Donald Campbell, who was killed on Coniston Water at Lancashire in England on January 4, 1967, when his boat broke up while travelling in excess of 480km/h.

Dumbleyung is primarily a farming community, known for its grain and livestock production and various biodiversity industries including: cereals, summer crops, oil mallee, yabbies, emus and trout. The population of the town is approximately 200, with the shire having a population of approximately 500. Its services include a general store, roadhouse, swimming pool, squash courts, recreational oval and 6 grass tennis courts. The General Store opens Mon – Fri 7.30am-5.30pm and Saturdays from 7am-12noon. The Roadhouse is open Friday 6am-10pm, Saturday, Sunday & Monday 8am-9pm. Both stores have EFTPOS and the Roadhouse also has ATM facilities in store.

Dumbleyung

Dumbleyung is situated 40km east of Wagin and 50km north of Katanning on the Wagin – Lake Grace Road.

The entrance to the Yacht Club is on the Wagin – Dumbleyung road, turn off at Kersley Drive approx. 8km west of Dumbleyung. The Yacht Club is approx. 4km down Kersley Drive.
